How AI answers Facebook Marketplace messages for car dealers

What buyers ask, what a good first reply contains, example replies you can adapt, and when a person should take over, whether the answer comes from AI or from your team.

In short: A good reply to a Facebook Marketplace message answers the buyer's question first, adds one useful detail and ends with one easy question that moves toward a visit, in the buyer's language. AI can send that reply right away, day or night, then qualify the buyer, book the test drive and save the lead. It should never negotiate, share private information, invent details or promise financing approval.

Marketplace messages are short, typed on a phone, and often sent to three or four dealers in the same evening. The buyer who writes "Is this still available?" at 9:30 p.m. is likely to visit the dealer who gives a clear, useful answer first. That's where AI helps: it can send that first answer right away, at any hour. The quality of the reply matters as much as its speed, so this guide covers both.

The messages dealers get

Most Marketplace conversations start with one of a handful of messages. Here's what each one usually means, and what a good reply does with it.

Buyer writes What they usually mean What a good reply does
"Is this still available?" "I'm interested. Are you real, and quick?" Confirms, adds one detail, offers a time
"What's your best price?" "Is there room to move?" Gives the listed price and hands any discussion to the team
"Would you take $X?" An opening offer Thanks them, keeps the listed price, offers a talk with the team
"I have a trade" "What's my vehicle worth to you?" Asks for year, make, model, km and photos
"Do you do financing?" Often: "Can I get approved?" Says yes if you do, asks about budget, promises nothing
"Can I see it tonight?" Ready to come in Offers real times before closing
"More pics?" or "Any video?" Checking before the drive over Sends them
"Any accidents?" Worried about history Shares the report you have, never guesses

What a good first reply contains

  1. The answer to the question asked. If they asked about kilometres, start with the kilometres.
  2. One useful detail. Something the buyer didn't ask about but cares about: one owner, new brakes, a remote starter, a second set of tires.
  3. One easy question. "Would tomorrow after 5 work?" gets an answer. "Let me know" usually doesn't.
  4. The buyer's language. If they wrote in French, answer in French.
  5. A short message. Two or three sentences. A wall of text reads like a form letter.

Speed matters too: answer within minutes when you can, including evenings and weekends, when many people shop. For more ready-made answers to the most common message, see Drive Good's article on replying to "Is this still available?"

About Meta's automatic replies

In March 2026, Meta announced in its newsroom that sellers can let Meta AI draft and send an automatic reply when a buyer asks whether an item is still available, using details from the listing such as the description, pickup location and price. Sellers can turn these replies on, preview them and edit them. That covers the first "yes." The questions that follow, about price, trade-ins, financing and a time to visit, still need an answer, and any automatic reply is only as accurate as the listing behind it.

Example replies

These are examples. Swap in your own vehicles, names and hours.

Example: "Is this still available?"

Hi Jordan, yes, the 2019 Ford F-150 XLT is still here. It has 92,000 km, a tow package and new all-season tires. Would tomorrow after 4 or Saturday morning work for a test drive?

Example: "What's your best price?"

The price in the listing is our price for this truck, plus taxes. Our sales manager can go over the total with you, including your trade-in if you have one. Would you rather come by or get a call?

Example: an offer below the price

Thanks for your offer, Jordan. We're keeping this one at the listed price. Our team can go over financing and your trade-in with you, if that helps. Would a call this afternoon work?

Example: trade-in

Yes, we take trade-ins. Could you send the year, make, model and kilometres of your vehicle, with a few photos? Our team will look at it before you come in.

Example: financing

Yes, we offer financing, and our team goes over the options with every buyer. Do you have a monthly budget in mind, and will you be trading in a vehicle?

Example: "Can I see it tonight?"

We're open until 8 p.m. tonight. I can book you at 6:30 or 7:15. Which works better? The truck will be ready out front.

Example: photos and video

Here are six more photos of the interior and the tires, and a short walkaround video. Anything else you'd like to see before you come in?

Example: a buyer writing in French

Bonjour Mélanie, oui, la Civic EX 2022 est toujours disponible. Elle a 41 000 km et un démarreur à distance. Voulez-vous venir l'essayer demain ?

Example: after closing

Thanks for your message. Yes, the 2018 Jayco travel trailer is still available. We open at 9 tomorrow. Would a time in the morning or the afternoon suit you better?

Example: next day, no answer yet

Hi Jordan, the F-150 is still here. I can send you a short video of the box and the interior if that helps.

A reply that follows up once, with something new, brings back buyers who simply got busy. Our guide to following up with car buyers using AI covers what to send next, and when to stop.

What never to say

  • A price different from the listing. Not "make me an offer," not "I can probably do better."
  • "You're approved." Only a lender approves credit. "Guaranteed approval" and "everyone gets financed" belong in the same bin.
  • Details nobody checked. "No accidents" without the report, "still under warranty" without confirming, a feature the vehicle doesn't have.
  • Private information. A salesperson's personal cell, a home address, anything about the previous owner or other customers.
  • "Come anytime." Book a time instead, so someone is ready when the buyer arrives.
  • Pressure that isn't true. "Someone's coming to see it in an hour" when nobody is.
  • An argument. No sarcasm about a low offer, no all caps.

Any AI that answers your buyers should treat the first four as fixed rules.

Two rules DriveGood AI never breaks

  1. 01

    It never negotiates a price.

Buyers get your advertised price. Any negotiation stays with your team.

  2. 02

    It never shares private information.

No personal addresses, private phone numbers or customer details. Ever.

How DriveGood AI behaves

When a person should take over

AI handles first replies and common questions well. A person should take over for:

  • an offer or a price discussion
  • a trade-in value
  • the details of a credit file
  • a buyer who is upset or has a complaint
  • anything after the sale: a repair, a return, a dispute

The handoff only works if the person sees everything that was said. That's why each conversation should be saved with the lead, not left on someone's phone.

How DriveGood AI handles Marketplace messages

DriveGood AI is Drive Good's own AI, built only for vehicle dealers. On Marketplace, in Messenger and on your Facebook page, it:

  • Answers right away, day or night, in English, French or Spanish, in the language the buyer wrote in. See multilingual AI for dealers.
  • Sends the photos and videos buyers ask for, so they know what they're coming to see.
  • Qualifies every buyer on trade-in, financing, budget and timing, and finance and credit leads get qualified faster. See AI lead qualification.
  • Books test drives and visits in your dealership's calendar. See AI test drive booking.
  • Follows up by text and email until the buyer answers. See AI lead follow-up.
  • Saves every conversation as a lead in your DMS, so whoever takes over can read what was said.

Replies can come from DriveGood AI, from a person, or both, your choice, and Drive Good's BDC service is available on request. Your team never logs in to DriveGood AI; they see the leads, the booked test drives and the conversations.

DriveGood AI comes in the Drive Good package, which includes Facebook Marketplace for car dealers. Read more about the AI chatbot for car dealers, or book a 20-minute demo with your own vehicles.

Check your replies every week

Whoever answers, a short weekly check keeps the quality up:

  • Unanswered conversations. Any message without a reply is a buyer you may have lost.
  • Replies without a question. A reply that ends without a next step usually ends the conversation.
  • Conversations that became appointments, and appointments that showed up.
